Figma Wins
Figma and Sketch represent two different eras of UI design tooling. Sketch pioneered the modern vector design workflow and was the industry standard for years. Figma disrupted it by moving design to the browser with real-time collaboration, making it the new standard for product teams. Today, Sketch remains relevant for Mac-first teams who prefer native performance, but Figma dominates industry adoption.
Real-time collaboration is Figma's defining advantage. Multiple designers can work on the same file simultaneously, seeing each other's cursors live. Stakeholders can leave comments directly on designs without needing a Figma account. Design reviews, client feedback, and cross-team handoffs all happen inside Figma without emailing files back and forth.
Sketch added collaboration features through Sketch Cloud but they remain asynchronous compared to Figma. Team members upload and share files, and others can view or comment, but real-time co-editing isn't available. For distributed or remote design teams, this is a significant limitation compared to Figma's live collaboration.
Figma's vector tools, auto layout, component variants, and design tokens are all industry-leading. The prototyping system with smart animate and interactive components allows building realistic product prototypes. Figma's variable system released in 2024 enables true design token management, making it excellent for design systems at scale.
Sketch invented many of the design patterns that Figma adopted — symbols (components), nested overrides, and artboards. For pure vector illustration and icon work, some designers still prefer Sketch's native rendering. Sketch also has an excellent symbol library system and the plugin ecosystem has powerful tools for specific workflows.
Figma's Dev Mode provides developers with automatically generated CSS, iOS, and Android code specs from design files. Developers can inspect any element, export assets, and view measurements without a design account. The transition from design to development is seamless and requires minimal back-and-forth communication.
Sketch offers developer handoff through Zeplin (third-party), Abstract, or its own Sketch Cloud inspect mode. While functional, it adds an extra tool to the workflow. The inspect experience is generally considered slightly less polished than Figma Dev Mode, though Sketch has been improving this area.

Cons
Figma is the clear choice for almost all product design teams in 2026. Its real-time collaboration, cross-platform support, and industry adoption make it the de facto standard. Sketch remains a solid option for Mac-only teams who value native performance, but it is increasingly hard to justify over Figma for most use cases.
